Lucas made his New York City Opera debut as Sarah in the World Premiere of Iain Bell and Mark Campbell’s new opera, STONEWALL, at Lincoln Center, in 2019. He was profiled in the New York Times and featured in the New Yorker’s “Talk of the Town.” Also during World Pride 50, Lucas performed at Bryant Park's Pride Concert with City Opera and sang with ChamberQUEER at the Brooklyn Arts Exchange.
In August 2019 Lucas created another new role as Queen Anne in the World Premiere of Whitney George and Bea Goodwin’s PRINCESS MALEINE with dell'Arte Opera Ensemble. Also in the 2019 season Lucas debuted with St. Petersburg Opera Company as The Nursing Sister in SUOR ANGELICA in May, and covered La Ciesca in GIANNI SCHICCHI. In January Lucas performed Hannah-after in Laura Kaminsky, Kimberly Reed & Mark Campbell’s AS ONE with Alamo City Opera and in November reprised the role at Alchemical Studios in NYC with colleague Nathaniel Sullivan.
Lucas is a frequent collaborator with librettist Bea Goodwin. In his debut as a writer & producer, Lucas & Bea told his coming-out story cabaret-style in: Mr. Liz’s One [wo] Man Show: [Living in the In-Between]. The show premiered off-off-Broadway at The Tank Theater in February 2019. Previously, to celebrate Lucas' public coming-out, Bea & composer Felix Jarrar created the role of Tristan Tzara for Lucas in their opera TABULA RASA in May 2018. Lucas is excited to continue his collaborations with Bea by premiering new music by Whitney George, Felix Jarrar & Rossa Crean this fall.
Lucas is a proud trans-man. Prior to the COVID pandemic he was praised for his “silky mezzo” (New York Times), a “shimmering alto” (Observer), and an “impressive firmly-grounded contralto” (Opera News). Lucas has transitioned with testosterone and will make his debut as a baritone with On Site Opera in August.
